The 5 best free mobile converter apps
Coinvertor
Free + $14.99/year Premium
Built mobile-first. The home screen is a list of your favorite currencies with a built-in keypad — type any amount, and every other row updates instantly. Supports 500+ crypto and fiat in one app. Drag to reorder. Tap a result to copy. Real-time rates from Binance feeds.
Why we ranked it #1: nothing else in the App Store / Play Store is built specifically for the "convert across crypto + fiat, on a phone" workflow with this little friction.
Free tier limits: 5 favorite currencies, prices update every 10 minutes. Premium removes both limits and ads for $14.99/year.
XE Currency
Free
The fiat default. 170+ fiat currencies, polished mobile UX, and an embedded money-transfer feature for sending funds internationally. Crypto is supported but limited compared to crypto-native apps.
Best for: travelers, freelancers, and anyone whose conversions are 95% fiat.
Tradeoff: if you regularly convert anything outside the top 5 cryptos, XE will frustrate you.
Coinbase
Free (account required)
The Coinbase app's converter is fast, ad-free, and well-designed — but it only covers assets Coinbase lists, and you need a Coinbase account to access it.
Best for: existing Coinbase users.
Tradeoff: overkill if you just want to convert; the app is built around trading.
CoinGecko
Free
The mobile app is a portfolio tracker first, with conversion as a secondary feature. Useful if you want market data + conversion in one app, but it's not a focused converter.
Best for: users who research before they convert.
Currency Converter Plus
Freemium
A long-standing mobile fiat converter. Solid library, decent UX. Light crypto support. Free tier is ad-supported.
Best for: casual mobile fiat users who want a familiar app.
What to look for in a free converter app
Free converter apps split on a few axes. The ones we used to rank:
- No account required. A converter shouldn't ask for your email. Coinvertor, XE, CoinGecko, and Currency Converter Plus all work without an account. Coinbase requires one.
- Real-time vs delayed rates. "Free" sometimes means rates that lag 10 minutes. Check the FAQ before you depend on a number.
- Ads vs no ads. Free + ad-free is rare — most paid tiers exist primarily to remove ads. Coinvertor, Currency Converter Plus.
- Offline mode. Caching last-known rate matters when you're traveling.
- iOS native vs cross-platform feel. A converter you use 30 times a day should feel native. Apps that ignore platform conventions get tiring fast.
Methodology
Apps were evaluated on May 1–3, 2026 using the latest version on iOS 18 and Android 15. Coverage and pricing data were taken from each app's listing on the App Store and Google Play, plus the publisher's website. We disclose Coinvertor as our own product; rankings reflect our honest read of how each app fits each user case.
